The Solar Wind : Probing the Heliosphere with Multiple Spacecraft

چکیده

The combination of the Voyager spacecraft in the outer heliosphere, Ulysses at high latitudes, and multiple solar wind monitors near Earth provides a unique opportunity to study the global structure and evolution of the solar wind. From solar minimum to solar maximum the latitudinal gradients of density and speed reverse so that at solar maximum speeds are higher near the solar equator, but solar cycle changes in the dynamic pressure occur at all solar latitudes. The MIR frequency increases during the ascending phase of the solar cycle and e ects the cosmic ray intensities. One example shows a MIR that is clearly driven by CMEs. Ulysses and Voyager observations are combined to quantify the speed decrease in the solar wind with distance and estimate the density of the local interstellar medium.

The Limits of Our Solar System

The heliosphere is the bubble the Sun carves out of the interstellar medium. The solar wind moves outward at supersonic speeds and carries with it the Sun’s magnetic field. The interstellar medium is also moving at supersonic speeds and carries with it the interstellar magnetic field. The boundary between the solar wind and the interstellar medium is called the heliopause. Before these plasmas ...

Propagation of the October/November 2003 CMEs through the heliosphere

[1] The solar storms of late October, early November 2003 generated many ICMEs. The Wind, ACE, Ulysses, Cassini, Voyager 2, and Voyager 1 spacecraft are distributed throughout the heliosphere and observe the effects of these ICMEs. We investigate whether these ICMEs form a global merged interaction region. WIND, ACE, and IMP 8 data are combined to produce a plasma and magnetic field data set fo...

Cosmic Rays in the Dynamic Heliosphere

The relation between the dynamics of the heliosphere, its shape and geometry, solar activity and cosmic ray variations is addressed. The global features of the heliosphere influence what happens inside its boundaries on a variety of time-scales. Galactic and anomalous cosmic rays are the messengers that convey vital information on global heliospheric changes in the manner that they respond to t...

Detecting the Termination Shock and Beyond

Based on Voyager 2 observations, a numerical model of the heliosphere, which includes the mutual interaction of the interstellar medium, solar wind plasma, and interstellar hydrogen, is employed to speculate on the possible crossing of the termination shock by the Voyager spacecraft. The multiple crossings caused by large-scale solar wind uctuations are studied quantitatively. In the event that...
